Serafin Ensemble Opens 2019-2020 Season at The Arts at Trinity on October 20, 2019
(Click here for a printable version of this release)

(Wilmington, Del.) September 9, 2019 - Serafin Ensemble, "The Serafins," a group of internationally acclaimed performing artists (string, wind, piano and vocalists) devoted to collaborative chamber music performances, opens its inaugural season at The Arts at Trinity on Sunday, October 20 at 4:00 p.m. The concert features artists Kate Ransom, violin, Charae Krueger, cello, and William Ransom, piano.

The program includes:

  • Bedeřich Smetana Two Pieces From My Native Land: two charming pieces for violin and piano that echo the sounds from "the homeland." Considered the first composer to develop a distinctive "Czech" signature in compositional style, Smetana's importance as a seminal figure in "Bohemian nationalist style" is unquestioned, although his contributions as a composer have been somewhat eclipsed by those of Antonin Dvořák.
  • Mozart Sonata in Bb Major, K. 378: this sonata provides contrast to the Slavic styles, with its classical perfection and its elegantly crafted exchange between the violin and piano.
  • Gaspar Cassadó Preludio-Fantasia (a Zarabanda) from Suite for Solo Cello: this work for solo cello explores a new Catalan voice of nationalism. Cassadó, from Barcelona, was a pupil of Pablo Casals, and consequently explores and exploits the many colors and sounds that can be produced on the cello.
  • Dvořák Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano in E Minor, Op. 90: the "Dumky" trio is famed for its extremes of character and mood - typical of the "dumka." The word literally means "thought" and has become a moniker for a style of Slavic music that conveys folk ballad or lament, and is typically melancholy with contrasting lively sections.

IF YOU GO: The Arts at Trinity presents Serafin Ensemble & Friends
WHEN: Sunday, October 20, 2019, at 4:00 p.m.

Announcing Serafin Summer Music — June 20-30, 2019 — presented at The Music School of Delaware in partnership with The University of Delaware Department of Music sponsored by William J. Stegeman, Ph.D.
(Click here for a printable version of this release)

(Wilmington, Del.) October 23, 2018 - The Serafins, in partnership with the University of Delaware Department of Music and The Music School of Delaware, announce Serafin Summer Music 2019. The ten-day festival, sponsored by William J. Stegeman, Ph.D., features eight scintillating performances by eighteen accomplished artists.

"I have long wanted to start a music festival. Bringing superb artists together to prepare and share marvelous masterworks with a community of eager listeners is a thrilling creative enterprise in every respect," comments Kate Ransom, Serafin violinist and artistic director. "Planning the programming is, in itself, a wonderful undertaking. And the opportunity to bring several organizations together in this endeavor is gratifying, as well."

Kate Ransom's role as Serafin violinist, along with her affiliation as President of The Music School of Delaware, and with University of Delaware (she serves as adjunct violin instructor and Serafin String Quartet is Quartet in Residence) offered special synergy to make the new festival possible. Leaders of each organization have supported the collaborative effort to start Serafin Summer Music, with the help of funding from Dr. William Stegeman. For local chamber music lovers the new festival also fills a void left when the Delaware Chamber Music Festival folded a year ago. The eighteen artists of the 2019 festival include locally based performers from University of Delaware and The Music School of Delaware, along with other accomplished artists from around the United States, such as Oklahoma, Ohio, Kentucky, Atlanta, Florida and New York.

"I am delighted to work with Kate to bring her vision for this festival to life," says Augustine Mercante, Festival Manager. "I look forward to an exceptional festival where we will showcase a sampling of the incredible musical talent in Delaware while introducing our audiences to amazing guest artists from around the nation."

All performances will be held at The Music School of Delaware, Wilmington Branch, 4101 N. Washington Street, Wilmington, DE. Tickets are $20 single ticket, $70 4-pack of tickets and $135 for a season ticket (all 8 performances). Purchase tickets by visiting www.brownpapertickets.com or calling (302) 762-1132.

One of Shostakovich's best-known chamber works, the Quintet for piano and strings, Op. 57 was written for and premiered by the Beethoven Quartet with the composer at the piano in 1940. Dvorák Quintet in G Major, Op.77 is a wonderful example of Dvorák's first maturity as a composer. The work is cast in classical Viennese forms with Bohemian melting melodies, poignant harmonies, and vigorous rhythms.

University of Delaware and The Arts at Trinity concerts in October feature the Serafins and guests
(Click here for a printable version of this release)

(Wilmington, Del.) September 19, 2018 - The Serafins collaborate with highly acclaimed guest artists for concerts at University of Delaware and The Arts at Trinity in October.

The University of Delaware presents Romance on Tuesday, October 9 at 8:00 p.m.
The concert features Serafin violinist, Kate Ransom, and cellist, Lawrence Stomberg, joined by UD faculty artists John David Smith, horn, and Julie Nishimura, piano to perform Brahms Sonatensatz for violin and piano, Wo02; Brahms Trio in Eb Major for violin, horn and piano, Op.40; and Schumann Trio in g minor for violin, piano and cello, Op.110.

The works come from the heart of the romantic era. The trios are mature masterworks by Schumann and Brahms which explore a vast emotional landscape from tenderness and grief to unabashed joy and elation. The Brahms "sonatensatz" for violin and piano offers dark and stormy outer sections which are contrasted by a characterful alternate sections, and a triumphant ending.

John David Smith

Julie Nishimura

The Arts at Trinity presents Ode to Joy - All Beethoven! on Sunday, October 21at 4:00 p.m.
Serafin String Quartet violinist Kate Ransom will be joined by guest artists Guang Wang, cello, of the Vega String Quartet, and Jennifer Nicole Campbell, piano, for performances of Beethoven Trio in Bb Major for violin, cello and piano, Op.97 "Archduke"; Beethoven Trio in Bb Major for violin, cello and piano, Op.11; and Beethoven Sonata for violin and piano in Eb Major, Op.12 No.3.

Cherished by listeners throughout history, Beethoven's "Archduke" trio is amply full of the composer's most sublime and soaring writing, as well as character and heart. The earlier trio, Op. 11, is performed in its version for violin (rather than clarinet) and is early Beethoven at his "classical best." The Sonata in Eb major for violin and piano is a sturdy and well-crafted work, with heartfelt sentiment in the lovely slow movement, and jaunty, high spirited first and last movements. The program choices present Beethoven in his most uplifting and joyous mode.

Ms. Ransom and Ms. Rust have shared the stage on numerous occasions over the years, both in collaborations of duos and other chamber works.

"I am thrilled to have the chance to play one of the most ravishingly romantic piano quintets in the repertoire— the Dvorak Quintet—with the Serafin String Quartet," comments Roberta Rust. "It will be an inspiring and memorable experience."

The Florida repertoire features:

  • Dvořák Piano Quintet in A Major, Op. 81, an audience pleasing, "rip roaring" masterwork that is a staple of the piano/string repertoire. This work represents Dvorak's inimitable, folk-derived classical style; bold, characterful rhythmic figures that make one want to dance; and colorful harmonies and bright voicing that add to the overall energy of the piece.
  • Haydn String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 74, No.3 "Horseman," the ‘galloping' finale theme of this work has given rise to its nickname.
  • Still Danzas de Panama for string quartet, a delightful set of four movements each drawing from the colorful dance styles from Panama, Central America and Africa.
  • Mendelssohn e minor Op. 44, No. 2, a work filled with infectious energy and elegant lyricism.
